After Volunteering

Despite the fact that this section can be overlooked by volunteer managers, it is still an incredibly important part of the volunteer experience. A volunteer’s final impressions of the organisation will stay with them and determine whether they want to remain in contact with you and possibly re-join.

It is also closely connected to the Before and During sections. How you have managed these areas will directly influence the approach you take when a volunteer leaves. When you begin preparing for volunteers it is worth considering what you want to happen as they finish up in their role and factor that into your planning. Revisit this during your volunteer’s time with the organisation, and make any adjustments based on their experience.

Get this stage right and your organisation will benefit in the long term with strengthened connections to community, a healthy reputation for supporting its volunteers, and a wider pool to recruit from.
